Orthopaedic Registrar

Orthopaedics

Job Purpose:

Inspire Medical is recruiting Orthopaedic Registrars for locum and fixed term vacancies at various locations across the country, in both HSE hospitals and private hospitals. Posts sit on the orthopaedic on-call rota of an acute hospital, covering the trauma take, the trauma and elective operating lists, fracture clinics and the orthopaedic wards.

Locum cover runs from single shifts to rolling blocks; fixed term contracts run from three months to a full six-month rotation aligned to the January and July changeovers. Salary and rates vary depending on whether the post is private or HSE — HSE posts pay on the HSE NCHD scale, private posts at the hospital’s own rate. General Registration with the Irish Medical Council is mandatory.

Reports to:

Consultant Orthopaedic Surgeon

Key Responsibilities:

  • Assess and manage trauma referrals from the emergency department, and admit, investigate and prepare patients for theatre under consultant supervision.
  • Take part in the orthopaedic on-call rota, including the trauma list and overnight cover.
  • Operate on trauma and elective lists at a level appropriate to your experience, and assist the consultant on major cases.
  • Run fracture clinics, review inpatients on daily ward rounds and keep accurate, timely clinical records.
  • Supervise SHOs and interns where rostered, and hand over safely at the start and end of every shift.

Skills / Qualifications / Experience:

  • IMC General Registration is mandatory — applications without it cannot be progressed.
  • At least two years’ surgical experience including time in trauma and orthopaedics; MRCS or equivalent is an advantage for registrar posts.
  • Current ATLS, and confidence managing the trauma take independently overnight with consultant support by phone.
  • Right to work in Ireland, or eligibility for a Critical Skills Employment Permit — we manage the process.
  • Garda vetting, occupational health clearance and two clinical references.

Note: this description is a guide to the role rather than an exhaustive list of duties, and responsibilities may develop over time in line with service needs. Appointment is subject to registration with the relevant regulator and to the candidate’s eligibility to work in Ireland or the United Kingdom. Inspire Medical is an equal opportunities employer.
