Minor Injuries Registrar

Emergency Medicine

Job Purpose:

Inspire Medical is recruiting Registrars for minor injury units for locum and fixed term positions at various locations across the country. Posts are in HSE injury units and in private urgent care clinics, seeing walk-in patients with injuries and illnesses that do not need an emergency department: fractures, sprains, wounds, burns and minor head injuries.

Units run daytime and evening hours with no overnight on-call, and suit a doctor with emergency medicine, orthopaedic or general practice experience. Locum cover runs from single shifts to rolling blocks; fixed term contracts run from three months upward. Salary and rates vary depending on whether the post is private or HSE. General Registration with the Irish Medical Council is mandatory.

Reports to:

Consultant in Emergency Medicine

Key Responsibilities:

  • Assess and treat walk-in adult and paediatric patients with minor injuries and illnesses within the unit’s scope.
  • Request and interpret plain X-rays, and reduce, splint or cast simple fractures and dislocations.
  • Close wounds, manage burns and provide tetanus and analgesia in line with unit protocols.
  • Recognise the patient who needs the emergency department or an inpatient specialty, and transfer safely.
  • Keep accurate records and arrange follow-up in fracture clinic, general practice or the unit’s review clinic.

Skills / Qualifications / Experience:

  • IMC General Registration is mandatory — applications without it cannot be progressed.
  • At least three years’ post-graduate experience, including time in emergency medicine, orthopaedics or general practice.
  • Confident in plain film interpretation, fracture management and wound care; current BLS, with ATLS or ACLS an advantage.
  • Comfortable working with senior nursing colleagues and consultant support by phone.
  • Garda vetting, occupational health clearance and two clinical references.

Note: this description is a guide to the role rather than an exhaustive list of duties, and responsibilities may develop over time in line with service needs. Appointment is subject to registration with the relevant regulator and to the candidate’s eligibility to work in Ireland or the United Kingdom. Inspire Medical is an equal opportunities employer.
